The Nordic Place Branding Report 2022 – Eight selected cases of place branding for economic developers, place leaders and marketers.

The pandemic and the climate emergency have brought the question of what is essential for society to function, but also what we need or want as individuals. What matters to us? A number of trends have been set in motion which will impact place branding and place development: a movement for better life quality and life balance, and urge for connecting with one another and the world we live in, and a search for meaning.

In this report, we look at how people’s aspirations have changed during Covid-19, and how places have reacted to it. We asked a number of practitioners what changes in the aspirations of their target groups they have noticed in their own localities and areas of work, how it affected their role, and what lessons they draw from it. In addition, discussions in Helsingborg enriched this content, and we share here an overview of the conversation that took place in June 2022.

The Nordic Place Branding Report 2020 – Ten selected cases of place branding for economic developers, place leaders and marketers.

“A place brand is not a slogan or a logo. A brand, in general, is the sum of the images, ideas and stories associated with a product, service provider or even place. Places have a reputation. We have an opinion of them, first or second hand. This affects our decision to visit, invest or live in a place.”

Now more than ever place brand is increasingly important. In this report, you will find ten selected case studies that range from an island near the Arctic circle, to Helsinki and from Amsterdam to Costa Rica. Providing you with practical inspiration and lessons, as well as challenges and innovative and interesting achievements across a variety of place sizes.

We believe this selection of case studies will inspire you and help you to learn new things that you can start implementing in your own work in creating better places.

8 steps of major change in a place context. The purpose of this guide is to inspire and show the way how to create and lead change in places – where the collaboration of multiple stakeholders is needed. The proposed eight-step approach is a simplification, but a powerful and proven one nonetheless of what it takes to lead and sustain long-term change.

Attractiveness is increasingly important for cities and regions – to attract and retain residents and talent, to promote investment, business and entrepreneurship, work with digitalisation and sustainability.

Improving place attractiveness is dependent on coordinating the work of an ecosystem of many different stakeholders from the public, private, civil society and academic sectors.

However, strategic initiatives in a place setting often fail. We simply underestimate the difficulties and lack the right tools to coordinate the work and get stakeholders to help drive the change that is needed. How do you lead and manage the ecosystem of different place stakeholders to improve the attractiveness of the place?
